On August 18, 2012, staff members of the Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC) toured around the Palace Museum with the children of migrant workers in Beijing. The activity, named “Hand in Hand - Big and Small, an Interesting Tour around the Forbidden City”, was organized by Beijing Social Development Center for Facilitators (BSDCF). BSDCF is a professional social work organization of supporting aim under the administration of Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau and was sponsored by Beijing Culture Promotion Center for Facilitators.
BAC has always been keen on public welfare. As early as at the time of its founding, it organized its staff members to donate money for education at some middle schools in suburb Beijing. At the time of Wen Chuan earthquake, BAC issued a written proposal for money donation for the disaster area, raised more than 1 million Yuan in donation. With the money, the primary school in Yu Guan village, Sanhe town, Jiang You city was able to be rebuilt.
A Team Show | Listen to the Presentation |
Some of the children participating in the activity go to public schools; some go to schools for the descendants of migrant workers. Most of their parents were engaged in cleaning, running small grocery stores or green stores, or doing odd jobs, having little time to spend with their children. And especially, those who live in the rural-urban continuum have scarcer public cultural recourses, thus, with the efforts and coordination of BSDCF, 25 children between 8 to 15 have formed partnership with the staff members of BAC one by one to have “an interesting tour around the Forbidden City” in the manner of “hand in hand - big and small”.
Record the Feelings | A Family Portrait |
During the activity, the staff members of BAC had in-depth communication with the children, attentively listened to the presentation on the Palace Museum given by the volunteer guide and participated in various games and races. At the end of the activity, everybody recorded and shared their respective gains and feelings of the half day with each other.
Pei Jing is a child educationally aided by BSDCF, living with his grandpa, a trash collector. He wrote about his feelings in the half day: I wish elder bother Zhang be happy and healthy every day. Because he was feared of losing me, he gripped my hand very firmly. I was very happy today.
Zhang Yu: the very first feeling about today is tiredness. However, it was very interesting. Though we were the slowest in naming our team at the beginning, you could see that we were all careful about it! Thanks to that elder sister who accompanied me today. She took good care of me all the day. Though the time we spent together was short, I really like the elder sister whose family name is Zhang too! What’s her name? You’d better find out yourself. Wish you be happy every day!
Li Zhen: I wish everything goes well with the work of elder brother Sun Yu and he will be happy every day. I was very happy today.
Bu Zehua: I was very happy today. I’ve learnt not only the marvelous history of the Palace Museum, but also many interesting stories about Forbidden City, and my knowledge was also increased a lot...
A half day activity is short; however, everybody was impressed with it. BAC will be more involved in activities for public welfare in the future.
