On March 1 2016, prior to the opening of the 19th Annual International Arbitration Day in Shanghai, Mr. David W. Rivkin, President of the International Bar Association (the “IBA”) visited the Beijing Arbitration Commission / the Beijing International Arbitration Center (the “BAC”) at the invitation of the BAC Deputy Secretary General Dr. Chen Fuyong. The host and the guest had an in-depth communication on issues of both interest.
Mr. Rivkin firstly watched the BAC’s video introduction entitled “Casting Credibility” and had an overall understanding of the BAC’s growth during the past two decades. On behalf of the BAC, Dr. Chen Fuyong welcomed Mr. Rivikin, and presented a brief introduction about the BAC’s development, features, self-identity and the proactive endeavor and achievement in internationalization in recent years. Mr. Rivkin congratulated the BAC on its success. With interest, he then had a discussion with Dr. Chen on the BAC’s internationalization, the BAC Arbitration Rules, features of Chinese arbitration and cooperation between the BAC and the IBA. In light of the booming growth of arbitration market of the Asia and Pacific region, the IBA as an international organization of legal profession has started to expand its business within the Asian market, and Mr. Rivikin therefore conveyed the IBA’s expectation of future cooperation with the BAC in relevant areas.
Meeting and discussion
Dr. Chen expressed the BAC’s willingness to have deeper communication and cooperation with the IBA. He believed that both parties can contribute their respective strengths and seek the possibilities of cooperation in academic exchange, professional training, marketing and the like, so as to jointly build a communication platform for legal professionals within the Asia and Pacific region. Thereafter, Dr. Chen showed Mr. Rivkin around the BAC’s office, case filing room, library, hearing rooms and conference halls. Mr. Rivkin was impressed by the superior equipment of the BAC, and praised the professional spirit of service of the BAC staffs.

The meeting was conducted in the No.1 hearing room of the BAC. The BAC’s Brand Management Director Mr. Xu Jie and Case Managers Mr. Lin Chenxi and Mr. Wang Weiyi also attended the meeting with and the reception of the IBA delegation.
