With the increase of international business arbitration cases, the Beijing Arbitration Commission endeavors to provide a platform to arbitrators and arbitration professionals to communicate with the international arbitration field. Therefore, the Commission has invited Thomas J. Stipanowich, Professor of Law at Pepperdine University and Academic Director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, to come speak. Professor Stipanowich will address trends in Mediation and Arbitration in the United States, with special emphasis on business transactions. His presentation will touch on the growing use of mediation in commercial, employment and intellectual property disputes, efforts to address current concerns about binding arbitration, and the evolution of multi-step dispute resolution provisions and programs. As mediation is becoming a more prevalent method of dispute resolution it is often combined with some form of arbitration, or vice versa. He will discuss various forms of interplay between mediation and arbitration, including situations where a mediator in a dispute acts as arbitrator, and where an arbitrator acts as a mediator. The speech will be of great use to arbitrators looking to apply mediation in an arbitration setting, as well as to parties interested in settling disputes using the many benefits of mediation.
