The 2006 International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA) Congress was held from 31 May to 4 June in Montreal, Canada. More than 570 participants from all over the world attended the conference, the theme of which was “Back to Basics”. During the two and a half days of the conference, the speakers and participants discussed topics including “Re-examining the Arbitration Agreement”, “Contemporary Practice in the Conduct of Proceedings” and “International Arbitration and the Generation of Legal Norms”. The topics well reflected the common issues facing international commercial arbitration, therefore, the participants responded enthusiastically. In these discussions, the Arbitration Rules of the Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC) were briefly introduced.
The Secretary-General of BAC, Mrs. Wang Hongsong, attended ICCA Montreal 2006 on behalf of BAC, and she was joined by a number of panel arbitrators who also attended. Nine panel arbitrators served as speakers during ICCA 2006, discussing the development of BAC and promoted BAC throughout the conference.
Mrs. Wang also met with many famous lawyers and arbitrators, as well as the leaders of many leading arbitration institutions, such as ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC, CIETAC, CIArb, etc. More and more practitioners have got to know BAC and are willing to cooperate with BAC in various ways.
BAC also benefited from the conference, which presented new developments in international commercial arbitration. BAC is expanding its business among international clients, and providing an attractive alternative choice for parties to solve disputes through arbitration in China. The conference provided a good platform for BAC to promote itself.
